Inshore Trout Fishing

The water is warming up in the creeks and the fish are MOVING OUT! Not to say you can’t find them laid up in backwater creeks and skinny water, but with water temps breaking into the 60’s, main rivers and points have fired up again. What do you need to know about water temps? Here it is -

  • Summer Heat - SPAWNING TIME. Trout seek high salinity water to spawn. Ever seen an angler taste the water? There is truth there. Move out and into estuaries to locate the salinity needed. They are seeking easy meals and comfort from the heat of the day. Early morning and after or near dark bites are usually the best. They will go deep during the heat of the day seeking cooler water.

  • Above 60 Degrees - Trout are “Happy”, feeding and comfortable. Pay attention to your bait, the Specs do. As bait migrates, so do the fish. Bites are more aggressive as the water warms. The fish are getting prepared for the spawn.

  • 50 - 60 degrees - Trout enjoy deeper areas and will move toward shallow flats seeking warmer water as the sun heats it. Top column water heats faster. Some bottoms hold heat better than others. Trout seek it out to be comfortable. They are not spawning and salinity is not as big an issue, they can be found in “FRESHER” water.

  • Under 50 Degrees - Their metabolism slows and they eat less. Tender bites are more common and often overlooked unless the angler is paying close attention.

RECENT BITES have been produced best with SUSPENDING BAITS. Mirrolure, Rapala, 6th Sense, Yozuri, Slick Lures, & Bomber all have excellent baits that suspend well. That Slick Lure we all are talking about is an excellent bait. It sinks fast though, I find it producing bigger fish when bounced along the bottom like a jig. You want a true suspending bait? Be sure to check out 6th Sense’s Hyper Jerk. I’m not sure exactly how it suspends the way it does, but the fall rate is almost non existent!

What colors? Different creeks & rivers all seem to have a set pattern of colors. Once you find what the fish are targeting in your area - you’ve got it! Don’t abandon the bait just because your not catching fish if you have confidence in it from prior trips (But don’t throw it all day either if your having no luck!). As the fish move out they can be harder to find. Schools of “dinks” are easily located (AND FUN) - but larger fish seem to roam and be more solitary.

POPPING CORKS! Its that time of year again. DOA, Cajun Thunder, and Four Horseman are a few excellent choices. Why popping corks? It’s the ultimate suspending bait with a sound and action imitating feeding and fleeing bait fish.

TOP WATER. Yep, lets start walking the dog and popping that Spook or Skitter! There ready for - even in open water!

Come see us at the shop! We'd love to talk some fishing with ya!! TIGHT LINES and be SAFE ON THE WATER!
