Captain Sparks
Hey everyone, Captain Travis here from Fish T.A.L.E.S Charters. We have seen some extremely cold weather the last few days and it has dropped water temps down in the low 40s. This drop has got the speckled trout pushing into the creeks and stacking up in big schools. With the temps being cold, look for trout in deeper water and fish the lower portion of the water column. Some of my preferred baits in deep water are KWigglers on a 1/16 or 1/8 once jig head (Available at EZ Bait and Tackle) As the day progresses and water temps climb, don't be scared to check shallower flats using suspending baits. Trout will push up and sun during the day feeding on poggies.
There is still plenty of red drum out on the main river and larger schools out in the Pamlico sound. The water tends to be clearer the further east you push this time of year so when targeting reds be careful not to spook them off the flats. Swim baits and jigs can be very effective this time of year for these fish.
The next few months is a great time to be targeting some of the states largest trout before they head back out to the big water. If you're looking to add a few tactics to make you more successful this winter give me a shout and let's get you out there. Good luck, be safe, and tight lines!
